The "Mini"

This is one of the very abundant miniature cars in the Netherlands.  As car tax (license renewal tabs) are priced according to the weight of the vehicle, these "minis" are very popular. Also note the parking situation... any wider and this vehicle would need to be half boat.

In the same family is the "Smart Car," a brainchild of Mercedes and Swatch.  It seats two (at best), is priced as a Mercedes, yet sized as a wristwatch.  From the book, The Undutchables, "... which makes it all the more surprising that the lanky lowlanders delight in cramming themselves into a space that is so small that the vehicle has no means of accomodating a spare tyre.  But love them they do, and buy them they definitely do.

"These adult perambulators consist of a tubular frame finished with flimsy plastic panels.  To change the colour or visual impact of the car, simply replace one or more panels.  A multitude of overpriced accessories are available - including a compact disk player, mobile telephone station, ski rack and the compulsory Bicycle carrier.  The latter is sheer cloggy marketing genius:  no room for a spare wheel, but plenty of room for a Bicycle.  And the car fits into a parking space half-filled by (and thus prepaid by the owner of) a motorcycle or another Smart Car."
