programminga process of determining the spatial needs for a project

Programming is the process of developing a list of spaces, their sizes, and their qualities. In this process, we will help you develop both a ‘quantitative program' and ‘qualitative program' for your project. The quantitative program is simply a list of spaces and the area required for each space. The qualitative program describes each space in detail – with special emphasis on how the space should make one feel – and also includes special requirements or program adjacencies.

Many clients come to us with a well-defined quantitative program, and after our first meeting, our clients generally decide to write a qualitative program. This is especially helpful for many of our clients to clarify with each other how they intend to use the spaces, how the spaces should feel, etc. Pictures from magazines and books often accompany the qualitative programs in order to help describe the feeling that a space should evoke.
