In 2001, architect Kendra Lwebuga received the University of Oregon's prestigious Ion Lewis Award. The Ion Lewis Award is a travel grant that was founded in 1921 by pioneering Portland architect, Ion Lewis. This award has been granted to young architects nearly every year since 1921, and Kendra has the distinction of being the first female recipient.

Kendra received the award based on her proposal to travel to sustainable cities in Europe, and to compile a list of European strategies for sustainable development.

In the Spring of 2002, Kendra traveled to Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam, and conducted interviews of those involved in recently constructed or renovated sustainable housing developments.

She now presents her research findings to myriad audiences, including academia, government, businesses, and community groups.
